So, you want to be an influencer – to shape impressions and make your mark on the ever-expanding social media platforms. Well, it’s not easy, nor is it impossible. It’s not about clicking a picture and posting every day, nor is it about professional cameras and exceptional cinematography. How do you start up as an influencer? Here are a few starter tips to launch kick start your journey as an influencer.

1. Pick your niche

More like, pick your passion. Your niche needs to be something you can be a specialist of. Figure out what you are good at – and the beauty of social media is that these don’t have to be a generic list of skills you are expected to have like dancing and drawing.

Are you passionate about eating? Make food your niche. Is your passion being a good mum? Post about being a mum. Being an influencer works mostly if you are passionate about what you post. Make your passion, your niche. Check out Karina Garcia’s YouTube channel, whose passion for slime lead her to have a global “slime” follower base and she even has her own brand of slime now!

2. Do something new

Every other person in the road is trying to be an influencer, but more seem to fail than succeed. This is understandable when everyone is trying to do the same thing. The same restaurants, the same sceneries, your following needs to see something unique! Evaluate your competition – and try to bring something new to the table.

3. Select your platform

Are you comfortable on Facebook? Or do you spend every waking moment on Instagram? Is your passion towards making funny videos and posting on YouTube? It’s always recommended to pick one specific channel and work on building a brand there. It’s good to have a presence in a few other platforms, but have one key platform to focus on.

Always keep in mind that the strategy of becoming an influencer on Instagram is different to becoming an influencer on Facebook, and it’s an entirely different ball game. So, pick a platform that resonates with your personal style and your target follower base.

4. Start a blog/ website

Your relationship with your followers should not end with just on social media. A blog will provide you with much more flexibility with how you add value to your followers.

Best thing is you don’t need to spend a cent or learn web development to create your own blog. Check out https://wordpress.org/; world’s most popular platform (content management system) for creating websites. WordPress will allow you to create a blog page for FREE in a matter of minutes. 5. Everyone needs a social media strategy

Being an influencer is not just random content on a platform. It’s also a specific and targeted process of getting across to the right people at the right time. Hence, the need for a social media strategy. Make a list of what will you post, how will you post, when, at what time? Be consistent, and don’t forget to always respond to your followers. The more you engage with them, the more they will engage with you!

6. Content is key!

Your content is what will ultimately set you on a pedestal as an influencer. So be specific about what you post – be innovative, unique and give your followers something to look forward to! Make it relevant, make it interesting, make it authentic, and of course, make it you! Have a content strategy that is targeted, specific, and gives a clear message.

Stats show that themed social media accounts and content have a better reach than generic lifestyle content. So, take a good hard look at what you will put out there, and spend as much as time you need to perfect it. Content is key. We cannot emphasize this enough.

7. Get the word out

When you start out as an influencer, building up a follower base is going to be a little difficult. Reach out to your friends and colleagues, and don’t hesitate to ask them to follow you and ask their friends to follow you! Start with your existing social group, and get their support to grow!

Also, consider collaborations with complimentary social media accounts – so that you can get across to another person’s social media following! Of course, paid promotions are another, tried and tested model to increase your visibility. So, if you are really focused on building your brand, and have budgets to go for it, give paid promotions a try!

8. Engage! Engage! Engage!

Reply to every comment and every message, respond to every question. The more you engage with your followers, the more people you can reach! Do shoutouts, wishes, just go out of your way to make your followers feel special.

9. At the end of the day, it’s a numbers game

Everything comes down to numbers. Be vigilant about your stats. It can tell you what works, what does not and what works really really well. This will give you an indication of what to do and what not to do, so be very focused on what your profile stats are trying to tell you!
